July 2024 news

Hello, and welcome to the THIRD official newsletter from your new Canary District Neighbourhood Association.

Summer's always busy for folks, catching up with family and friends, but here are a few community events happening you should know about:

Sunday July 28th 9am-noon —
A Buffet for Butterflies

Let's help lay out a buffet for butterflies and all our other native pollinator friends.

We're working to extend the power of Corktown Common through the neighbourhood by creating pollinator-friendly gardens throughout and around the area.

Join our friends in Corktown to participate in the cleanup of some beds on Sumach Street, right on the border of the two neighbourhoods. This is a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community, connect with fellow gardening enthusiasts, and make a positive impact on the environment.

Summer in Canary

Dream/Kilmer, the folks who designed and built most of our neighbourhood, are sponsoring a whole bunch of community events from July to September 2024.

Enjoy live music at Corktown Common Park, Lou Lou’s flower vendor, and free face painting. Participate in run clubs with the Shorerunners group and unwind with complimentary drinks afterwards. Don’t miss the free paint and sip events with Pinot’s Palette, $100 gift card giveaways, and dog meetups with free goodies. Bring your family, friends, and pets for a fun-filled summer!

Sunday August 11th 10am-noon — Canary District Community Cleanup

The neighbourhood cleanup we did a few months ago was a smashing success — remember how pristine everything was right after? It's time to do one again.

Meet outside The Aviary Pub at 10am; we will provide gloves, bags, and trash grabbers and assign you one of our lovely streets. There will also be a special weeding contingent, especially around the Foundry Building, where things are going wild (but not in a good way — nearly all invasive species).

Optional: Meet back at the pub at noon for a celebratory beer or pop!

Wanted: Spooky Volunteers!

We're going to hold the spookiest Hallowe'en ever in Canary District, with the whole neighbourhood teaming up to create a spooky walk (with treats!) on our Front St. Promenade from Cherry Street to Corktown Common.

This event is still in the planning stages, and we need volunteers to help fine-tune the details! If you'd like to help, just reply to this email or simply click here and let us know in the comments that you're up for some spooky volunteering!

DID YOU KNOW?

The current population of Canary District is estimated at just over 5,148 people, living in 2,948 units. Here's how they are distributed among our 9 occupied buildings:

Of course this is going to change. People will be moving into Canary House and Birch House before the end of the year; Blocks 13 and 20 as well as the Foundry will add thousands of new residents, ending up with an estimated population of approximately 11,000 in ±10 years.

Where are all these buildings? Know them by these clues:

  • Maple House is the future home of home-baked croissants
  • Canary Park is where we enjoy locally brewed beer
  • Canary Commons is where we can get the most groceries
  • Canary District is where we can get hand-crafted power smoothies
  • River City 3 is the closest to the river
  • Canary Block is where we can crawl up a wall
  • River City 4 is where we can buy milk at 4am
  • Palace Street Housing — the clue's right in the name
  • Wigwamen is where you can book a cruise
  • Canary House is wrapped around a historical building
  • Birch House overlooks a space for sacred ceremonies
