Along with our Distillery District neighbours, the Gooderham & Worts Neighbourhood Association (GWNA), we are working toward an integrated approach to support individuals to live as long as possible in their community as they age.

The GWNA has been working on this program since 2023 as Living Long in the Distillery, and they have invited Canary District to join them in certain projects. Together we will explore future possibilities to support living long in our communities. Our first co-program will be in summer 2025, where exercise and fall prevention classes will be made mutually available to senior residents of both neighbourhoods.

Why It’s Important

Canary District, the Distillery District, and Corktown have significant aging populations. Social services that allow older people to live in their own homes tend to be scattered across the city; locating services in a neighbourhood hub will give residents the option to age in place while staying healthy and independent.

The Story

“Naturally Occurring Retirement Communities” (NORC) are areas where a significant portion of residents are aging but wish to continue to live independently. In partnership with Woodgreen and the NORC Innovation Centre at University Health Network, we are pitching for a seniors intergenerational hub in the area.

We would like to see a hub in place where:

  • Seniors services can be delivered in our neighbourhoods;
  • Seniors can congregate for meals and meetings;
  • Seniors can volunteer to work with young people (breakfast and homework clubs, arts, crafts, etc);
  • Personal Support Workers can have a home base to serve our area with ease and co-ordination.
