May 2024 News

Hello, and welcome to the first official newsletter from your new Canary District Neighbourhood Association! We're writing to let you know about some upcoming events, as well as other items of interest to the neighbourhood.

Saturday May 4th 2:30pm —
Canary in the Pan Am Nest: A Jane's Walk

Let Adam Cohoon and Jennifer Conroy show you where the Force is strong in Canary District — and where it isn't (yet).

Join us for a walk in which we examine the accessibility of arts and public culture space in urban planning and community in general, and in Canary District in particular. We will start at the lamppost sculpture on Front Street (434 Front St. East, near Cherry). After looping around the neighbourhood, the walk will end at the water guardian sculpture less than a block away.

Sunday May 26th 3-5pm —
CDNA Launch Party

Join us on the patio of the Aviary to help celebrate the birth of the Canary District Neighbourhood Association

Come and meet your fellow neighbourhood community builders, enjoy an afternoon snack, and play some cool games and win prizes!

We all know we live in the greatest brand-new neighbourhood in Toronto... but how much do we know? Find out by participating in a special Canary District themed trivia contest.

The Aviary may be a pub, but this is definitely a family-friendly event. RSVP now!

And the Rest is History (in the making)

At the request of the West Don Lands Committee, a working group of residents from the neighbourhood began meeting in the fall of 2023. You may recall being consulted (via flyers and social media) on the name of the new association.

A lot has been accomplished on your behalf in the last six months:

  • We engaged residents in helping us choose a name (the resounding favourite was Canary District Neighbourhood Association).

  • We met with many community members and stakeholders (and continue to do so) to stay abreast of community needs and perspectives.

  • We reached out to our neighbouring Residents Associations for advice, and to engage in ongoing mutual projects.

  • We created a brand identity and set up a website and social media channels on Facebook and Instagram.

  • We have already initiated repairs on infrastructure such as dead trees and burned-out streetlights (did you notice?).

  • We held a successful "Canary Cleanup" event for Clean Toronto Together, collecting a mini-mountain of trash and lots of smiles.

  • We are actively monitoring ongoing development in the neighbourhood, establishing links with our City Councillor Chris Moise, City Planners, MPP Kristyn Wong-Tam, Waterfront Toronto, and developers Dream, Aspen Ridge, and Metrolinx.

All this before our "official" launch (which we hope you'll attend)! It's been a busy six months to say the least.
