The GO Transit Don Yard is an area of railroad tracks immediately west of the Don River. Metrolinx has been doing construction work here including drilling, excavating and other activities around the clock, especially between the hours of 6pm and 5am in order to not disrupt the GO train schedule.

Why It’s Important

Ultimately the Ontario Line will benefit the downtown east, but right now the level of noise and disruption to the neighbourhood, especially to the people living on Mill Street, has been severe.

The Story

In 2014 City of Toronto planners began looking at how to use existing rail lines passing to the south of Canary District for a new transit line from Union Station Danforth Avenue. In April 2019, the province announced the Ontario Line, replacing the city's plans.

Construction on the section of Ontario Line nearest us began in 2023 with track improvements, including replacement of the railway bridge over Eastern Avenue with a wider bridge in order to handle the six tracks to pass through the station.

Unfortunately in August 2024 as construction arrived at the area south of us, these works began disrupting the sleep of thousands of residents, including children, who live beside the tracks. This introduced a serious health hazard and an egregious violation of residents' right to peace. Together, CDNA and the tenants of Maple House on Mill Street have been working with our MPPs and with Metrolinx to find acceptable solutions as the work continues.

Completion date is unclear, although completion of Ontario Line as a whole is estimated to be 2031.
