May 2025 News

Here's what's coming up this month:

  • Like neighbourhood events? Help make them happen! Join our newly-formed Events Committee
  • Three tantalizing opportunities to look beyond closed doors this weekend in Doors Open Toronto
  • Represent our neighbourhood on the 51 Division Community Police Liaison Committee
  • Your dream thrift-find could be waiting for you at the upcoming St. Lawrence REmarket
  • Clean Canary Together — we did it!

We (Still) Want Your Brain

Help form our Events Committee!

We're looking for folks to help us launch an Events Committee: a group of 5-7 community members who will help identify event opportunities and carry out the planning and staging needed, with help from other volunteers.

Neighbourhood events are the number-one thing people asked for in our first survey back in October 2024. Since then we've organized a launch party, Halloween trick-or-treating, neighbourhood clean-up events, and many neighbourhood walks; we'd like to do much, much more. But we need help!

If you're interested in planning and organizing events in Canary District, please reply to this newsletter or email [email protected].

Doors Open Toronto

There are three sites very close to Canary District who are participating in Doors Open Toronto this weekend. Pop in and check them out!

Young Centre for the Performing Arts

50 Tank House Lane
Saturday & Sunday May 24-25 10am-5pm

Explore your sense of play and gain insight into the world of theatre with drama games, guided tours and family-friendly activities. Click here for details.

Toronto Humane Society

11 River Street
Saturday & Sunday May 24-25 10am-5pm

Take an informative tour through different areas of the building. You'll even get to see some animals, from dogs and cats to small pets. Click here for details.

Enoch Turner Schoolhouse

106 Trinity Street
Sunday May 25 12-5pm

Explore Toronto's oldest school building and learn more about the Victorian history of the neighbourhood. Tours are self-guided, with site interpretation and history available from volunteers. Click here for details.

Represent Us! 51 Division Community Police Liaison Committee

The CPLC is a volunteer-led organization made up of representatives from neighbourhood and business organizations across Downtown East. They'd love to have a member from Canary District.

They identify, prioritize and problem solve local policing issues by establishing an inclusive forum to educate and inform stakeholders as well as establish lines of communication with our police counterparts.

Are you into this? The Committee meets monthly in person at 51 Division on the second Wednesday of the month at 6:30pm. Our goal would be to have two reps who can spell each other if one gets busy or goes on vacation.

Reply to this email or email [email protected] if you'd like to know more!

St. Lawrence REmarket

Wednesday & Thursday May 28-29

The St. Lawrence Neighbourhood Association (SLNA) is holding a pop-up community service to collect unwanted goods and prevent them from being sent to landfills. Go check out this neighbour's event over on The Esplanade, and see if this is something we should do here as well!

More details here.

Should we do something like this in Canary District? Let us know by replying.

Music in the Park

SATURDAY MAY 31ST | 2PM - 3PM
Corktown Common

Bring a blanket, pack a picnic, and enjoy live classical performances by the exemplary student musicians from The Taylor Academy at the Royal Conservatory of Music.

This free event is made possible by the Royal Conservatory of Music and Dream Community Foundation.

Clean Canary Together Event: Great Job!

Last month nearly 40 volunteers from every building in the neighbourhood kicked off the season by spending 2 hours cleaning up our streets. With so many people working together we were able to cover the whole neighbourhood, from Eastern Avenue to the railroad tracks! Way to go!

Huge thank you to all our volunteers, especially the CDNA Streetscape Committee who organized the event.

Watch for our next litter pickup in a few months.
