Before we begin, we present our newly-launched Scooper Heroes program... explained in a single poster! Now you know.

Canary Scooper Heroes is part of our broader Pet Waste Strategy, which you can read about here.
Volunteer Shout-Out
This month’s volunteer shout-out goes to all the folks that helped out with the September 26 yard sale. No event happens without the people who show up early, stay late, and make sure everything runs smoothly — so we want to give a proper shout-out and a big THANK YOU to everyone who gave their time:
We managed to get a photo of the afternoon shift! Pictured L-R: Claire H, Jan R, Mirane A, Maurita H, Ayla G, Franca L, Jaime L, Eric M, Tim H, Biff A. Not pictured: the morning shift is equally worthy: Brianna B, Jackie N, Shaun P, Hiwot G, Joe M, Stephanie Z, and Jason D.

Halloween on the Promenade
Saturday, October 31 • 4:30 to 7:30 pm
Front Street Promenade
This year, Halloween kicks off at 4:30 pm with the dog costume contest organized by @dogsclubtoronto. Bring your best-dressed pup to the Promenade: judging at 4:45, prizes for the winners. Stick around and enjoy the Halloween atmosphere as the neighbourhood gets dark. 🐶
Trick-or-Treating: Then from 6:00 to 7:30 pm, participating businesses hand out treats to kids in costume. They will be clearly marked with signs — all kids need is a costume, a small bag, and their best "Trick or treat!" Each stop means one or two treats, with plenty of stations along the street to visit.
Pumpkin Parade
Sackville Park • Sunday Nov 1 • 5:30-7:00pm
Our neighbours are throwing a glowing send-off to Halloween! Corktown's Pumpkin Parade is back at Sackville Park on Sunday, November 1st from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. Kids are invited to bring their carved pumpkins and display them for the whole community to enjoy.
Stick around after the parade for Illuminated Tales — a lantern-lit walk through Corktown's stories and history. It's a pay-what-you-can event, with donations going to support future events.

- North of Mill St = Ward 13 >> YMCA Community Room, 461 Cherry St
-
South of Mill St = Ward 10 >> Young Centre for the Performing Arts, 50 Tank House Lane
On September 28, ten candidates for Ward 13 City Councillor showed up at the Cooper Koo Family YMCA and spent an evening fielding questions drawn from contributions by community members across the ward.
We co-hosted the event with our neighbours at the Gooderham-Worts Neighbourhood Association (Distillery District) and the Corktown Residents and Business Association. Big thank-you to the YMCA for providing the venue (they're also the polling station for Ward 13).
We livestreamed the evening on YouTube, and while a technical glitch unfortunately cut the recording short 40 minutes before the end, you can watch the first hour here.

Members Needed! Urban Ecology Committee
We are looking for 5–7 volunteers who would like to help identify, protect, and strengthen Canary District's urban ecology for the long term.
Canary District was built on a foundation of native plants — from Corktown Common to the pollinator gardens that park staff and volunteers have added throughout the neighbourhood. CDNA is forming a brand-new Urban Ecology Committee to help maintain this foundation.
The committee's scope will include our urban tree canopy, pollinator gardens, Corktown Common, and the hoped-for Urban Prairie Trail — working with the Board and City staff to protect and expand our living heritage.
Read the full scope and mandate here, and apply to join by emailing [email protected].
Rekai Centre Goes Above Grade
Our new neighbour has achieved another milestone: The Rekai Centre’s new 348-bed long-term care campus “Cherry Place” (northwest corner of Front and Cherry, you can’t miss it because of all the cranes) is now building above-grade.
The facility will bring long-term care, health services, and education under one roof, plus some additional perks relevant to Canary District:
A Life Labs facility on the ground floor, open to the general public. No more trips out of the neighbourhood for bloodwork and other testing.
There is meeting space in their plans, and they have indicated that we can use it for community events… this is huge!
They are partnering with George Brown College to train healthcare students and professionals — a boon to the GB students in Canary District and Toronto-wide.
You can read updates on their construction progress here... or just stroll by :-)
